To decrypt is to find the original text hidden in a coded
message without the encryption key. What Baudouin de Jaer
has accomplished with Adolf Wölfli’s works will surely stand
as the testimony of a unique will to comprehend. This is not
about appreciation or even interpretation; it is about knowing
what lies under what is seen – not quite under it but inside it
– what constitutes the works’ silence? What de Jaer found is
that under this silence sounds can be heard – and not any
sounds: the sounds of an utterly unusual and stunning fanfare.
Decryption surely is a human characteristic, mostly related to
secrecy and the warrior art of hiding information, and listening
through a painting is quite probably an experience that will
never be repeated.

Décrypter consiste à retrouver le texte original à partir
d’un message chiffré sans posséder la clé de (dé)chiffrement.
Ce que Baudouin de Jaer a accompli face à l’oeuvre d’Adolf
Wölfli restera sans doute comme le témoignage d’une volonté
de percer très singulière.
Il ne s’agit pas d’apprécier, ni même d’interpréter. Mais de savoir
ce qui se trame à l’arrière de ce qui est vu – non tout à fait à l’arrière
mais au dedans – qu’est-ce qui constitue le silence de l’oeuvre ?
Ce qui fut trouvé c’est que derrière ce silence bruissait du son –
et pas n’importe quel son – la sonorité d’une fanfare absolument
curieuse et renversante. Le décryptage est sans doute un trait
humain, en grande partie liée au secret et à l’art guerrier de
dissimuler une information, entendre à travers un tableau
restera une expérience qui ne se reproduira sans doute pas.
