It was most certainly good to know John Levy. He was a close friend of Peter H. Fritsch, founder of the New York label Lyrichord; he was considered by David Toop as the greatest ethnomusicologist and sound engineer; and by a strange twist of fate, he met Robert Wyatt as the two of them shared the same room at the Stoke Mandeville Hospital for a few sinister months in 1974.

Proposition #1 (voix)

Le bruit m’a beaucoup préoccupé, le bruit désiré, celui qui, surgi à travers les machines du dernier siècle, se fit plier par des musiciens sans peur – sa lente émergence, comment il nous a pénétré, nous a sidéré, comment il nous a changé (1)  – mais la voix, n’est-ce pas la voix qui nous transperce alors que nous nous établissons à peine ? Elle nous berce, certes, en nos premières heures, mais elle nous traverse aussi, nous perce, nous met au jour. Le bruit déplace mais n’emporte pas – ce qui nous transporte c’est toujours une ou un ensemble de voix. Chacun garde en soi celles qui lui sont propres, celles qui œuvrent à l’intérieur. Inutilité à vouloir convaincre, l’expérience primordiale des voix ne peut se partager, elle nous définit par l’unicité de son emprunte. Ainsi sommes-nous ses réceptacles.
